“Three of the six people were hurt seriously enough to require hospitalization,” Hayward Fire Department public information officer, Jennifer Vu said

Hayward firefighters had used ropes to stabilize the shop, then they conducted a search of the building and capped the gas line after detecting the gas leak at the auto shop.

“Names of the dead are being withheld pending notifications of families,” Hayward Fire Department public information officer, Jennifer Vu said.

They were transported to the Hayward General Hospital and there were no other serious injuries reported in Hayward.

“I felt a rolling motion that lasted for about 30 seconds, with a big jolt coming in the middle.”

12 police, Five American Cross workers, and twenty-one fire personnel responded to the building collapse, with some of them arriving within the first 4 minutes of the earthquake.

“The earthquake was a strong one and it occurred on the Hayward Fault, which runs under the hills,” scientist from the U.S. Geological Survey, Penny Gertz said.

The earthquake was given a 6.4 on the Richter Scale

“I was eating my breakfast when the room started rolling. I dove under the table just as I heard an explosion outside and a chunk of cement flew through my kitchen window. That’s when the screaming start across the street,” Hayward resident, Mike Beamer said.

People as far south as Los Angeles and as north as Redding were able to feel the earthquake.
