Student of the Month Story

Who: Victoria Newell, the Student of the Month, Stephen Kane, the principal, and Matt Flick, Victoria's favorite teacher.

How: Matt Flick nominated Victoria for Student of the Month

This Monday at Bowie High School, Victoria Newell was nominated by Mr. Flick and won Student of the Month.

Victoria won Student of the Month because she was nominated for her grades and how she is effective in class.

“There is a lot of pressure to live up to that expectation,” said 9^th grader Victoria Newell.

Student of the Month is a prestigious award given to the students that are deserving of that honor through academics or athletics.

“I think she got Student of the Month because she is a great student and works hard,” English teacher Mr. Flick said.

Mr. Flick was the teacher that nominated Victoria because of her academic qualities she has and he is also her favorite teacher.

“If a teacher thinks a certain student of theirs is worthy of Student of the Month they talk with me about the student and I make sure they haven’t gotten into any trouble and I make the final decision if there are multiple students,” Bowie principal Mr. Kane said.

The nominations are important in deciding who deserves it based on Mr. Kane’s requirements of the Student of the Month whether it is for academics or athletics.

“The qualifications for becoming Student of the Month is if it is for academics then it is that you have good grades B or higher and their teachers say they are a hard worker and good in class. For athletics how we do Student of the Month is how they are doing in that sport and that they are keeping up with their grades and working hard and not slacking off,” Bowie principal Mr. Kane said.

His qualifications are to make sure the Student of the Month goes to a worthy student that has worked hard for academics, athletics, or both.

“I check my grades from time to time so if I am failing I can do something about it,” 9^th grader Victoria Newell said.

Victoria does check her grades and this is a possible way to help out students in school is to check their grades.

“I did come up with this idea because I thought students could use a boost and this would be a confidence booster,” Bowie principal Mr. Kane said.

Mr. Kane came up with the Student of the Month for Bowie High School and put it into effect as of Monday of this week. Victoria is the first Student of the Month.
